For Canton athlete Devyn Reiger, basketball is so much more than a game

With two offers already in the books, Canton’s Devyn Reiger is setting her sights on playing college basketball. But the junior has also set some pretty big goals, and accomplishing those goals won’t happen without hard work and dedication. In other words, there is plenty of work still to be done.

“I have high expectations for myself in everything I do,” she said. “I truly love the game of basketball, and my parents have always set strong examples of hard work and commitment. My younger sister, Alex, is always right by my side working out with me or cheering me on. We are definitely a basketball family!”

Devyn, the daughter of Michael and Cameron Reiger, began her basketball journey at a very early age.

“I’ve played basketball for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I remember my first time I played organized basketball when I was 5 for the YMCA and I was the only girl on the team. From the start I have loved the competitiveness and the challenge it brings.”

Her basketball career at Canton tipped off with a huge challenge. She made the varsity team but had knee surgery and had to miss most of the season.

“That year taught me a lot about patience and resilience, even when I couldn’t be on the court,” she said.

Reiger’s sophomore year was another learning curve.

“I started in the majority of the games and focused on growing my confidence and consistency,” she said. “I was proud that I received my scholar athlete patch, which meant a lot to me because I take academics seriously.”

This season, things are bouncing in the right direction for Reiger and the Cobras. The team put in a lot of hard work in the off-season and that extra effort should show up in the win column.

“I’m excited to show everyone what Canton basketball is made of,” she said. “We got off to a good start and are looking to keep it going. As a team, our goal is to get 1 percent better every day, and compete with full effort every time we lace up our shoes. Personally, I want to lead by example, be a vocal leader and do whatever the team needs to win.”

Reiger, 16, also is a slam dunk in the classroom, with a 4.13 GPA. She participates in Unified Sports and National Honor Society. She also enjoys family time, cards, baking and traveling to Higgins Lake.

In the off-season, Reiger plays for the Lady Tigers Elite E40, based out of Cincinnati. Last year, they reached the national championship for Nike Nationals.

“The group of girls is amazing and we connect very well,” she said. “The coaches are very supportive and uplifting.”

The sport isn’t about dribbling, passing and shooting. For Reiger, it’s much more important than that.

“Basketball has taught me so much beyond the game,” she said. “Discipline, leadership, accountability, and how to be a great teammate. I am grateful for every coach, teammate and opportunity that’s helped shape who I am today.”
